Chemoport Management
Chemotherapy has always been a fear factor for most patients. Not because of the side effects of the chemotherapy per se but because of the difficult IV access repeatedly, the thrombosis and the thrombophlebitis. Repeated access for collection of blood as well as administration of chemotherapy is a painful thought process for the patient.
To ease the issues, Chemoports are used for patients requiring long term IV Access. These are specialized boxes which are attached to a tubing and are implanted under the skin, with the tip of the tubing in a central vein. This helps in painless access for blood collection, drugs administration blood transfusion etc. and can be kept in situ for even a few years with only intermittent flushing. No special care is otherwise needed for care.
Chemoport insertion is usually done under Local / General anaesthesia with guidance of a sonography machine. It requires handling by chemoport trained staff which are now routinely available at all cancer centers. Removal of Chemoport is an outpatient procedure and is done under local anaesthesia.
